Click here to read more about custom color coordination. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Freshwater pearls: A closer look at these organic gems When we say we use Grade A round freshwater pearls in our bridal jewelry and accessories, we’re not just giving you another piece of information. We’re bragging! But maybe a pearl tutorial is in order. Pearls are created by living creatures and are thus considered an organic gem. Each pearl starts out as a piece of sand, grit or other particle that makes its way into the shell of a mollusk. In it’s defense of the intruder, the mollusk coats the particle with layer after layer of a substance called nacre, or mother-of-pearl, which eventually becomes thick enough to form a pearl. There are different kinds of pearls, obviously, and some are more expensive and more valuable than others. Natural pearls are formed when an irritant enters an oyster’s shell and continuous layers of calcium (nacre) grow in layers around the particle. Natural pearls vary in shape depending on the shape of the piece being coated. They are very rare and very expensive. Most natural pearls available today are already used in vintage jewelry or are marketed as “vintage pearls”. Cultured Pearls grow inside of a mollusk like natural pearls, but with the help of a pearl farmer. A shell is carefully opened and an irritant is inserted (i.e. sand, tiny pieces of coral or shell etc). Shapes of objects vary, depending on the final shape of pearl that's desired. Freshwater Cultured Pearls are farmed in freshwater and grown in mussels. Freshwater pearls are grown with usually twenty or more pearls in each mussel, and it only takes about one and a half years or so to harvest. Saltwater Cultured Pearls are farmed in saltwater and grown in oysters. Only one pearls is grown for each oyster. It takes more than two and a half years to get a good harvest. A lot of bead or pearl companies that sell freshwater pearls sell mostly poor quality and poorly shaped freshwater pearls. Just to say your selling a freshwater pearl necklace doesn’t always mean it cost much of anything. You can buy a strand of nugget or potato shaped freshwater pearls for around $2.50 (yeah, surprised?) The shape (round, potato, nugget, rice…) and the luster (it is shiny and even? Are there “rings” around the pearl? Is it dull?) determine the price of the pearl. We were fortunate enough to find a pearl supplier who sends us the best quality pearls we have found anywhere. Round, lusterous, consistant. We pay a lot more for them, but it makes all the difference in our jewelry and headpiece designs. Freshwater pearls can be beautiful and add an organic feel to jewelry and hair accessories. They match the fabric of wedding gowns, add a soft touch and coordinate wonderfully with Swarovski crystal and cubic zirconia (gems which also have their own unique characteristics.) You definitely dont have to include pearls for your bridal jewelry to feel like it belongs in a wedding, but when you combine them with creative design, they can be quite irresistible! | ||
There are a lot of bridal jewelry options these days. But what are you really getting when you purchase that discount piece? At Amy's, we take pride in our designs and the quality. And while any bridal jewelry company can say the same, we've yet to find one that offers the same quality materials that we do, including sterling silver that is tarnish resistant. HOW ABOUT YOUR SILVER? Most wedding accessory and bridal jewelry companies use silver plated metal, which results in a very inexpensive piece of jewelry. But did you know that silver plated metal cannot be polished? This means that once it tarnishes (and quickly!) it cannot be restored. And what about sterling silver bridal jewelry? When left in open air, sterling silver will tarnish quickly. Multiple polishings may be required and can damage genuine pearls. At Amy's, we use the new, amazingly tarnish-resistant Argentium sterling silver in our bridal jewelry, headpieces and wedding hairpins! The result is a longer-lasting, more beautiful piece of valuable jewelry. Does Argentium cost more? Of course. But we think it's worth it.
